SAMPLE NEEDED

Our Rheumatoid Factor (RF) test basically is a single test requiring a blood sample. No fasting or preparation is required by the patient before testing. To perform this test you will need to visit your laboratory of choice for the collection of a Blood sample.

TEST BACKGROUND  INFORMATION

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects most joints, especially the metacarpal and phalangeal joints, the proximal interphalangeal joints, and the wrists; however, any synovial joint can be involved.

In this disease, abnormal immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies is produced by lymphocytes in the synovial membranes act as "antigens". These antigenic IgG react with other IgG and IgM antibodies in the patient’s serum to produce immune complexes that activate complement systems and inflammatory systems causing a joint damage. The reactive IgM is called Rheumatoid factor (RF). Tissues other than the joints, including those of the blood vessels, lungs, nerves, and heart, may also be involved in the autoimmune inflammation.

Tests for RF are directed toward identification of the IgM antibodies. RF is occasionally seen in patietns with tuberculosis, infectious mononucleosis, chronic hepatitis, and subacute bacterial endocarditis as well.
