Our Cancer Risk Screening (Male) test basically consists of Prostate specific antigen (PSA) and Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). To perform this test you will need to visit your laboratory of choice for the collection of a blood sample.

TEST BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases. Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. In all types of cancer, some of the body’s cells begin to divide uncontrollably and spread into surrounding tissues.

Included in our screening tests with potential predictive value are Prostate specific antigen (PSA) and CEA. The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test is a useful test to screen men for prostate cancer, to help determine the necessity for a biopsy of the prostate, to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for prostate cancer, and/or to detect recurrence of prostate cancer. Also when a man has symptoms suggestive of prostate cancer such as difficult, painful, and/or frequent urination.

The PSA test and digital rectal exam (DRE) may be used to screen both asymptomatic and symptomatic men for prostate cancer. PSA is a protein produced primarily by cells in the prostate and most of the PSA is released into semen, but small amounts of it are also released into the blood. PSA exists in two forms in the blood: free (not bound) and complexed (cPSA, bound to other proteins). Laboratory tests can measure free PSA or total PSA (bound plus unbound).

The Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a protein that normally occurs in fetal gut tissue, and with detectable serum levels disappearing by the time of birth. The CEA was thought to be specific indicator of the presence of colorectal cancer. However, subsequent presence of elevated level of this protein in patients with variety of cancers (e.g. breast, pancreatic, gastric, hepatobiliary, and sarcomas, as well as benign diseases like ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, cirrhosis, pancreatitis has been reported. Although not considered specific for colorectal cancer and mainly used for its monitoring and treatment, however elevated levels of these proteins (CA-125 and CAE) are of value in the predictive approach and a clue for further clinical investigations by your physicians.
