Our Frontline Check is a panel that include the common test ordered by physician when a sick person presents in the clinic needing care. It includes FBS, Malaria parasite test, Widal (Typhoid) test and Complete Blood count.

FBS (or RBS) is a blood glucose test that measures the amount of a type of sugar, called glucose in the blood. Normally, blood glucose levels increase slightly after you eat. This increase causes the pancreas to release insulin so that the blood glucose levels do not get too high. Blood glucose levels that remain high over time can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. Serum glucose levels must be evaluated according to the time of day they are performed. For example, a glucose level of 135mg/dl may be abnormal if the patient is in the fasting state, but this level will be within normal limits if the patient had eaten a mean within the last hour.

Malaria is the red blood cell infection caused by parasite protozoa called Plasmodium. There are four species of Plasmodium that can cause malaria, namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malariae. Plasmodium falciparum is the most common parasite Nigeria, Africa, South-East Asia and South. About 40% of the world’s population are at risk of malaria, but malaria is especially a serious problem in Africa where one in every five childhood death is due to the effects of the disease. Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria.

Malaria spreads from person to person through the bite of female mosquito, and also through blood transfusion, infected mother to her unborn baby during pregnancy, as well as through sharing of infected used needles or injections. Symptoms of malaria includes high fever, severe chills with shaking followed by episodes of fever and sweating, fall in body temperature, anaemia, body aches, nausea, enlarged spleen, mild jaundice, convulsions, vomiting, arthralgia, and respiratory distress syndrome, etc. Malaria is diagnosed through blood test in the Laboratory. This include microscopic examination of thick and thin blood films, antigen detection tests, quantitative buffy coat (QBC), and molecular tests using PCR.

Typhoid fever, also known simply as typhoid, is a bacterial infection due to Salmonella typhi. Symptoms may vary from mild to severe and usually begin six to thirty days after exposure. Often there is a gradual onset of a high fever over several days. Weakness, abdominal pain, constipation, and headaches also commonly occur. Diarrhea is uncommon and vomiting is not usually severe. Some people develop a skin rash with rose colored spots.

Diagnosis is by either culturing the bacteria or detecting the bacterium's DNA in the blood, stool, or bone marrow. Widal test which is demonstration of antibodies against Salmonella antigens, O-somatic and H-flagellar, are a common place in tropical regions. However the specificity of the test, even though still in use, is relatively low. Symptoms are similar to that of many other infectious diseases.

A complete blood count (CBC), also known as full blood count (FBC), or full blood examination (FBE), is a blood panel that gives information about the cells in a person's blood, such as the cell count for each cell type and the concentrations of various proteins and minerals. Abnormally high or low counts may indicate the presence of many forms of disease, and hence blood counts are among the most commonly performed blood tests in medicine, as they can provide an overview of a patient's general health status. A CBC is also routinely performed during annual physical examinations. Complete blood counts are done to monitor overall health, to screen for some diseases, to confirm a diagnosis of some medical conditions, to monitor a medical condition, and to monitor changes in the body caused by medical treatments.
